What is Moldovan Wine?

First, we have to talk about what exactly Moldovan wine is. Moldovan wine is created from grapes that are grown in the Republic of Moldova. This country is located in Southeastern Europe and shares a border with Romania. Moldovan wine is generally associated with red wines. While the grapes used for white wine are often Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay, red grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Merlot are used for red wine. It is important to note that some varieties can be used for both red and white wine.

Why is Moldovan Wine Rare?

There are many reasons why Moldovan wine is rare. First, the country is so small that it’s hard for it to make a significant impact in the wine industry. A significant portion of Moldova’s land is also made up of mountains, which aren’t ideal for grape cultivation. The climate in this region is also less than ideal for grape cultivation because it’s too warm. This can lead to the grapes getting too ripe, which isn’t ideal for creating high-quality wine. Because of these factors, Moldovan wine is rare and hard to come by.

Why Does Moldova have the World’s Biggest Wine Cellar?

Yes, it does, Moldova’s Mileștii Mici proudly claims the title as the largest wine cellar in the world. Utilising an old limestone mine retired in the late 1960s, its caverns have been transformed into Mileștii Mici’s wine cellar. Temperatures in the subterranean space, which stretches about 150 miles, stays consistently in the mid-50s Fahrenheit, plus constant humidity creates ideal conditions for ageing to perfection. Almost two million bottles take up half the space, which earned the cellar recognition from the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest wine collection in the world by the number of bottles.
